Lines of Ngurra – Country

This painting maps the ridgelines, escarpments, and energy lines of my Country – Kuruma. The jagged, wave-like forms represent ranges and mesa’s seen from a distance, as well as the way they are felt underfoot and in spirit. These are not just physical features – they hold story, identity, and connection.

The fine horizontal lines are like songlines – they carry memory. They echo the way knowledge has been passed down through generations: line by line, mark by mark, voice by voice.

The blending of colours – red, green, ochre, and grey – reflects the diversity of Country. Red earth, spinifex and riverbanks, rocky gorges and ghost gum shadows. These colours aren’t just landscape – they’re life, ceremony, and survival.

Running through the middle is a pulse – a rhythm – drawn in white and outlined in red. It’s the heartbeat of the land, the path of our old people, and the continuing movement of culture.

This work speaks to how Country is layered: seen, sung, walked, and remembered.
