Between Two Worlds

Marli Ryan
This piece is about navigating the nuanced life of a mixed race woman. Many feelings arise when i reflect on this art. We are not all that different and with the same breath we are total worlds apart. This is what I felt deep within my heart, a constant battle between right and wrong, good and bad, black or white an internal fight that never seemed to give up. I was down outta luck, I felt stuck you see because I didn’t belong to either. Not black enough for black and not white enough for white, a constant fight.
Was I wrong for just wanting to belong? Each dash etched like lesions, a lesson for every season, an accumulation of experiences foraged for the soulful soup that was carefully curated for me. Duality the reality, neither noir nor blanco, a magnificent meld miraculously made for this existence.
